Newborn Care Q & A

When does newborn care start?

Newborn care is exactly that: pediatric care for your child from the moment they enter the world. The doctors at Seashore Pediatrics take newborn care to the next level by going to your hospital within 24 hours of the birth of your child to make sure everything is in order with your newborn.

And this preliminary exam goes far beyond checking for 10 fingers and 10 toes. The doctors thoroughly evaluate your newborn’s:

  • Appearance
  • Musculoskeletal structure
  • Eyes, nose, and throat
  • Respiratory health
  • Heart health
  • Overall organ health

After your doctor is satisfied that everything checks out, you make arrangements to bring your child into Seashore Pediatrics within a few days after you go home for a follow-up appointment.

How often should I bring my newborn to the doctor?

The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends the following schedule for most newborns:

  • Three to five days after birth
  • Months 1, 2, 4, 6, 9, 12, 15, 18, and 24

The reason behind the frequency of these visits is to provide you with critical oversight as your child’s systems come online. The doctors at Seashore Pediatrics understand what milestones and areas of health to check during each visit, which typically includes:

  • Eyesight
  • Hearing
  • Joint health
  • Skull bone health
  • Blood screening
  • Behavioral health
  • Cognitive function

These visits also provide you with wonderful opportunities to seek advice and counsel on breastfeeding, nutrition, sleep habits, and more. The doctors at Seashore Pediatrics partner with parents to ensure that they have the tools they need to help their babies grow into healthy young adults.

When do vaccinations begin?

Another important aspect of newborn care is the start of the vaccination process, which begins at month one or two. When your child comes into the world, they have very few defenses against foreign bacteria and viruses, so the earlier you vaccinate, the better. The doctors at Seashore Pediatrics offer the full slate of vaccinations and work with you to schedule them appropriately.
